But historical overfishing\, loss of spawning habitat\, and warming waters have led to drastic drops in smelt numbers. Each spring\, adventurous Community Scientists across Maine’s coastline pull on their muck boots and head into the chilly spring air to help biologists find out when\, where\, and how many Rainbow Smelt are spawning in streams across the state. Come join Dr. Danielle Frechette to learn about the colorful lives of Rainbow Smelt and how you can become a Smelt Sleuth and contribute to this exciting community science effort. If you already have a journal and camera to use\, or have a phone that takes hi-resolution photos\, that’s great! If not\, we’ll have camera kits available for use starting May 25th. To help you get started\, we’re offering three photo and writing workshops at the Freeport Community Library. If this sounds like you\, learning to be a mushroom farmer with North Spore is the answer! The focus of this class will be to educate participants in two different outdoor mushroom cultivation methods:\nLog Inoculation\nMushroom Beds\nOver the course of 2 hours\, we will explore fundamental principles of mushroom cultivation\, discuss the many benefits of growing mushrooms\, learn about various species and their growth parameters\, and of course\, create mushroom logs and a mushroom bed. Every participant will be able to take the log (approx. 2.5 feet) they inoculate home to care for and produce tasty mushrooms!
