SUMMARY:Wolfe's Neck Center - Searching for Smelt
DESCRIPTION:The cold-tolerant Rainbow Smelt is the first of the sea-run fishes that return to the streams\, brooks and river’s along Maine’s coastline to reproduce in the spring\, making them a key food source for humans and wildlife. But historical overfishing\, loss of spawning habitat\, and warming waters have led to drastic drops in smelt numbers. Each spring\, adventurous Community Scientists across Maine’s coastline pull on their muck boots and head into the chilly spring air to help biologists find out when\, where\, and how many Rainbow Smelt are spawning in streams across the state. Come join Dr. Danielle Frechette to learn about the colorful lives of Rainbow Smelt and how you can become a Smelt Sleuth and contribute to this exciting community science effort. Bring your own muck boots for a night walk down to the stream following the talk to look for spawning smelt\, a true sign of spring on the Maine Coast. \nTICKETS \nWolfe’s Neck Center for Agriculture & the Environment\n184 Burnett Rd.\nFreeport\, ME 04032\n207-865-4469\nwolfesneck.org

SUMMARY:Wolfe's Neck Center - Reading Your Landscape: A Site Assessment Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The first step to building a resilient native plant garden\, a wildflower meadow\, a native hedgerow\, or a native buffer planting is to familiarize yourself with the site’s conditions\, to best match the right plants to the place. When well-matched to your site\, native plants will establish quickly and repopulate the landscape without need for supplemental water\, soil amendments\, fertilizer\, pesticides\, or frequent pruning. Join Wild Seed Project at Wolfe’s Neck Center as we dive into the process of how to do a site assessment to figure out what plants will grow best for you. This program will be centered around a hands-on model site assessment at Wolfes Neck’s new Community Seed Garden\, a part of the larger Carbon Footpath. \nREGISTER \nWolfe’s Neck Center for Agriculture & the Environment\n184 Burnett Rd.\nFreeport\, ME 04032\n207-865-9307\nwolfesneck.org
