SUMMARY:L.L.Bean - Made in Maine Concert Series: Muddy Ruckus
DESCRIPTION:Muddy Ruckus is a “darkly inventive” rock duo according to the New York Music Daily. Guitarist Ryan Flaherty and drummer Erika Stahl of Portland\, Maine\, play a grungy style of railroad indie punk blues – a stripped-down sound that delivers full rock band energy\, blending rootsy guitar and edgy percussion on a suitcase drum kit. In the spring of 2023\, the band released their fourth full-length album\, Vacationland\, featuring 14 red-hot tracks that blend psychedelic rock\, punk blues\, and fiery lyrics into a sound that’s uniquely Muddy Ruckus. \nFree concerts every Saturday\, 7 p.m. We’ve invited some of the best hometown talent to take the stage in Discovery Park. Grab a bite from local food trucks and support some of our favorite Maine musicians. \nGuests are welcome to put out chairs starting at 4 p.m. No blankets on the lawn please. \nL.L.Bean\nL.L.Bean Discovery Park\n95 Main St.\nFreeport\, ME 04032

SUMMARY:Sidle House - playing through
DESCRIPTION:playing through in the Hall and Studio galleries\, is a solo exhibition of works by Steve Sunenblick. Describing his process as…“travail!!” and\, “pushing the process relentlessly!!” Steve explains that while some artists conceptualize their work in advance\, his approach is\, “a give and take with color\, form\, space and line. Sometimes with an initial idea – but never a fixed one controlling where the painting goes.” On the other side of discomfort is where connection is made. “It takes me to a private place where I can drift\, revel\, and respond spontaneously\, expressively\, deliberately – always searching and adjusting for the feeling evoked in me.” Intense athletes could describe this as\, ‘playing through pain.’ Also\, ‘Playing through’ is a golfing convention where players make allowances for differing paces of play. The artist is no stranger to golf. Prior to Sunenblick’s well-known\, often whimsical ‘Art of Golf’ prints and original works (now in collections and on display around the world); his achievements included completing Peace Corp service\, law school and practice\, a BFA in painting\, residencies at the Vermont Studio Center\, and being involved in the artist community at Portland’s Bakery Studio building. Today\, Steve paints in Mexico and in his Maine studio. \nGALLERY HOURS:\nTHURSDAYS\, FRIDAYS\, SATURDAY 3-6 PM (AUGUST 29 THRU OCTOBER 11) \nTo visit during off hours\, please call/text Maddy at 512.771.1149 \nSidle House\n20 Bartol Island Rd\,\nFreeport\, ME\n512-771-1149\nsidlehouse.com

SUMMARY:Sidle House - Diaphanous
DESCRIPTION:Diaphanous: Inspired by the translucent qualities and feminine connotations of tulle\, artists Aidan Fraser\, Natalie Nelson\, and Quinn Evans offer a contemporary interpretation of diaphanous in their collaborative exhibition centered on transparency\, selfhood\, and resilience. The artists explore the visibility of vulnerability\, both personal and collective\, through self-portraiture across distinct mediums. Each engages with themes of the body\, perception\, and identity\, drawing on their own experiences to examine what it means to be seen. Through their collaboration\, the artists braid personal stories into a communal narrative about the female form\, shared vulnerabilities and understanding\, and the joyful resistance made possible through connection. \nARTIST WALK+TALK W/ DIAPHANOUS • SAT 10/11 2PM \nGALLERY HOURS\nThursdays\, Fridays\, Saturdays 3-6 PM (August 29 thru October 11) \nSidle House Gallery\n20 Bartol Island Rd.\nFreeport\, ME 04032\nsidlehouse.com

SUMMARY:Meetinghouse Arts - Local Color: Life Long Dreams
DESCRIPTION:•A show of acrylics and oils by a collegial group of local artists. \nInitially drawn together by our common experiences in Liz Prescott’s art studio\, we meet each week to paint together at the Harraseeket Grange. We paint\, socialize\, and support one another; we help each other grow as artists. And we laugh a lot. \nOver the past three years\, the essence of our group \, now 13 members\, has become a sense of mutual support and critique . We share our painting\, we help each other grow as artists and we care and support one another. As we all have expressed\, Liz has been the common thread: teacher\, friend\, cheerleader or whatever it took to help us on our creative journey. \nMost of our subject matter is drawn from personal experiences and our travels. In our exhibit you will find land and seascapes\, scenes from coastal Maine to a chateau in France\, still life\, florals…and more. We hope you will enjoy it! \nThough not everyone chooses to exhibit\, our member list includes: Tina Edwards\, Kathleen Alfiero\, Susan Caldwell\, Drue Rowena\, Lisa Weickert\, Ann Kistler\, Mary Mraz\, Judy Shank\, Liz Poole\, Bette York\, Sandi Lemmerman\, MaryAnn Healey\, Catriona Heavey\, and Catherine Ruby. Honorary member is Liz Prescott. \nThe show runs August 29-September 7. Gallery hours are Monday-Saturday 10:00-5:00 and Sunday 12:00-4:00. We will not be open on Tuesday\, Sept 2. \nMeetinghouse Arts\n40 Main St\,\nFreeport\, ME 04032\n(207) 865-0044\nmeetinghousearts.org

SUMMARY:Freeport Speech - The Many Ways in Which Art & Literature Impact Our Lives
DESCRIPTION:AO Scott is an American journalist and cultural critic. He started his career at The New York Review of Books. In 2000\, he began writing film reviews for The New York Times and became its chief film critic in 2004. In 2023\, he moved to The New York Times Book Review as a critic at large\, writing about literature and ideas. His love of film was sparked during an extended visit to Paris in his teens during which he frequented independent movie theaters scattered on the Left Bank. Scott cited the growing gap between audience and critic as an impetus for his return to the book world. Scott has taught at Wesleyan University and is the author of the book Better Living Through Criticism: How to Think About Art\, Pleasure\, Beauty and Truth. \nRichard Russo is a novelist\, short story writer\, screenwriter and teacher. He is the author of ten novels and\, in 2002\, received the Pulitzer Prize for Empire Falls. He is a master at capturing small-town life\, often setting his work in Maine. Several of his works have been adapted into television series and movies. His most recent book\, to be released in May 2025\, is a collection of essays titled Life and Art that explores how life and art inform each other and how the stories we tell ourselves about both shape our understanding of the world around us. Russo has a PhD from the University of Arizona and taught literature for a time at Colby College. He and his wife are residents of Maine. \nJeffrey Brown is an American journalist and senior correspondent for the PBS News Hour. Brown’s reports focus on arts and literature\, and he has interviewed numerous writers\, poets\, and musicians. Brown studied Classics at the University of California\, Berkeley\, and received a master’s degree in journalism from Columbia. Brown began work at the MacNeil/Lehrer NewsHour in 1988 and served in a variety of roles as a reporter and producer in economics\, national affairs and general events\, until he was named the PBS NewHour’s arts correspondent in 2002 and chief correspondent for arts\, culture and society in 2013. Brown published a collection of poetry called The News in 2015. Brown has won a News & Documentary Emmy Award and Peabody Award\, among other accolades. \nIn examining the intersection of art and literature with life\, these three cultural luminaries will help highlight the broader impact of art and literature on our social and political identities. \nLead Sponsors for this event are The Dara Jeanne Kaufman Fund and Greg Boulos \nNet proceeds from this event to benefit Wolfe’s Neck Center. Tickets are available for $20 at FreeportSpeech.org or on Eventbrite. \nEnjoy pre-lecture music for 30 minutes before the performance. \nFreeport Speech\nFreeport Performing Arts Center\n30 Holbrook Street\nFreeport\, ME 04032\nfreeportspeech.org
