SUMMARY:Wolfe's Neck Center - Searching for Smelt
DESCRIPTION:The cold-tolerant Rainbow Smelt is the first of the sea-run fishes that return to the streams\, brooks and river’s along Maine’s coastline to reproduce in the spring\, making them a key food source for humans and wildlife. But historical overfishing\, loss of spawning habitat\, and warming waters have led to drastic drops in smelt numbers. Each spring\, adventurous Community Scientists across Maine’s coastline pull on their muck boots and head into the chilly spring air to help biologists find out when\, where\, and how many Rainbow Smelt are spawning in streams across the state. Come join Dr. Danielle Frechette to learn about the colorful lives of Rainbow Smelt and how you can become a Smelt Sleuth and contribute to this exciting community science effort. Bring your own muck boots for a night walk down to the stream following the talk to look for spawning smelt\, a true sign of spring on the Maine Coast. \nTICKETS \nWolfe’s Neck Center for Agriculture & the Environment\n184 Burnett Rd.\nFreeport\, ME 04032\n207-865-4469\nwolfesneck.org

SUMMARY:Meetinghouse Arts - Salon 24: The Art of the Salon Style Hanging
DESCRIPTION:Salon style was a hierarchical way of displaying work in large competition-like\, juried exhibitions. The shows were criticized for being too uniform\, uninteresting. A single style (later dubbed “academic art”) was favored\, while more avant-garde or experimental work was refused. This gave birth to the salons-de-refuse\, exhibitions of refused work and the beginning of movements that pushed art in new directions like Impressionism and Fauvism.\nSalon 24 leans towards the latter. This un-juried exhibition provides a diversity of art and artist\, offering a show that is interesting and engaging. A show intended to give a voice and connection to the community of creators through a pull from\nhistory. \nOn Thursday evenings during the 4 week show we will offer social gatherings for artists and art enthusiasts to come together as the original salons did when creative shared experiences were one of the main attractions. \nMORE INFORMATION \nWed-Sat 10 AM- 5PM ; Sundays 12PM-4PM\, Mon. and Tues. by appointment \nMeetinghouse Arts\n40 Main St\,\nFreeport\, ME 04032\n(207) 865-0044\nmeetinghusearts.org

SUMMARY:Walk for Historical and Ecological Recovery - Launch Event
DESCRIPTION:Over the course of 2024\, partners committed to surfacing the truths of colonization and oppression in the place known for millennia by the Wabanaki people as the Dawnland will engage with local communities on a journey across land and water\, shining a light on the ways that Indigenous\, Black\, and settler-descendent populations are represented—or not—in Maine’s commemorative landscape. \nConvened by the public history nonprofit Atlantic Black Box\, the Walk for Historical and Ecological Recovery (WHERE2024) is a broad-based and community-engaged effort carried out in partnership with Wabanaki REACH\, Indigo Arts Alliance\, Community Change Inc.\, and In Kinship Collective. \nOver seven months\, a series of walks and programs situated in seven locations throughout the state will engage the public in surfacing suppressed stories of genocide and survival\, enslavement and resistance\, displacement and represencing. \nJoin WHERE2024 partners on Thursday\, May 9 at 5:30 pm at 35 Little River Lane\, Freeport\, Maine\, for a launch event hosted by the Land We Live On to kick off this epic collective journey.
