DESCRIPTION:This Safari Highlights Armchair Travel program will be presented in the Freeport Community Library Meeting Room in two parts – feel free to attend one or both! On Tuesday\, February 18 from 2:00-3:00pm\, Part I: Rwanda and Kenya; on Tuesday\, February 25 from 2:00-3:00pm\, Part II: Tanzania\, especially the Serengeti.\nIn Swahili\, “safari” means “journey” or “travel.” Come travel with Suanne Williams-Lindgren as she ‘safari’s through the Eastern African countries of Rwanda\, Kenya\, and Tanzania to meet some amazing locals and experience the countries’ cultures and wildlife.\nPart I: Rwanda and Kenya. We’ll look at the rebirth of Rwanda after the devastating 1994 genocide and hike into the mountains to visit Dian Fossey’s gorillas. In Kenya\, we will spend some time with the Maasai people to witness their evolving traditions. And we’ll take a look at some incredible wildlife!\nPart II: Tanzania\, especially the Serengeti. Come learn about two of the oldest remaining tribes in the world! The Hadzabe are one of the last remaining hunter-gatherer tribes in the world\, and their people speak one of the three “click” languages in East Africa. UNESCO has categorized their language as “vulnerable” due to their small population. We will also meet people of the Datooga Nilotic ethnic group from Tanzania. We’ll see the Ngorongoro Crater and immerse ourselves in viewing the wildlife that lives there as well as in the Serengeti! \nThis program is part of our Armchair Travel series\, where neighbors take us on grand photography tours of their travels in distant lands. SUMMARY:Gathering In Memory of Freeport Flag Lady\, JoAnn Miller
DESCRIPTION:JoAnn Miller\, 88\, was one of the three Flag Ladies who stood with her friends on Main Street in Freeport every Tuesday for 18 years. They started the tradition after the 9/11 attacks to honor the military and those who died in the attacks. They started their tradition of waving flags after then-President George W. Bush asked people to step out of their homes one night and light candles following the deadly terrorist attack. They would go on to stand every Tuesday\, the 11th of every month in 2001\, and every single day during the Iraq War. The group retired in 2019. \nMiller’s remains will receive a first responder escort to the funeral home after the gathering on Main Street. \nCorner of Main St. & School St. \n
