SUMMARY:Freeport Community Library - The James Webb Space Telescope: A Year In Review
DESCRIPTION:Come join Jon Wallace at Freeport Community Library on July 12th at 5:30-6:30pm and find out some of what the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) has been doing in its first year of operation. \nLast July the world got to see the first images from JWST and we were awed by their detail and the scope of the mission! Since then\, there hasn’t been much in the news about the telescope… so\, what has JWST been seeing and doing and what discoveries has it made? We’ll review what its goals are and why/how the telescope ‘sees’ in infrared and then look at some of the amazing things it has imaged and discovered about our solar system\, other solar systems\, and the early universe. \nJon Wallace was an award-winning high school science teacher in Meriden\, Connecticut for over 32 years. He is a NASA Solar System Ambassador and serves on the Board of the Society of Amateur Radio Astronomers (SARA). \nThis event is free and open to the public\, we hope to see you there! For questions or directions to the library\, visit freeportlibrary.com or give us a call at 207-865-3307. \nFreeport Community Library\n10 Library Dr\,\nFreeport\, ME 04032\n(207) 865-3307\nfreeportlibrary.com

SUMMARY:Freeport Community Library - ScheckMate: Passion & Nostalgia
DESCRIPTION:ScheckMate is Raffael Scheck on Baroque and Romantic Cello & Timothy Burris on Theorbo and Romantic Guitar. Join us on Tuesday\, July 30 from 3:00-4:00PM for a live performance of the program Passion & Nostalgia by ScheckMate\, featuring pieces that express deep passion\, sometimes inward looking and soft\, and sometimes exuberant and powerful. \nFrom Antonio Vivaldi’s introspective but happy suite-like g minor cello sonata\, we move to the expressive capriccio #8 by Giuseppe Maria Dell’Abaco and to the passionate Bolero and Solea by Spanish guitar composer Julián Arcas (1832-82). In direct response\, the program features an homage to Arcas written in 2017 by German cellist and gambist Dietmar Berger and culminates in the nostalgic three nocturnes by German composer Friedrich Burgmüller. The first two pieces are performed on baroque instruments (cello and theorbo\, a baroque bass lute). The other pieces use a romantic guitar and a romantic cello. \nThis event is free and open to the public. SUMMARY:Freeport Community Library - Vermicomposting for Beginners & Alumni
DESCRIPTION:Freeport Community Library is pleased to welcome back Jock Robie\, who will be presenting his Vermicomposting Workshop on Tuesday\, August 8 from 5:30-7:30PM. Intended for beginners and returning attendees alike\, Jock will not only provide detailed information and instruction\, but even free starter kits for attendees who want to begin their own worm bins at home! This in-person event will be held in FCL’s Meeting Room. \nThe session begins with the instructor assisting prior attendees with the harvest of their worm bins. Then he demonstrates and assists as beginners set up their own worm bins (availability limited to five households – one worm bin per household). After the worm bins are assembled\, the instructor will give his “Worm Talk.” The talk covers several subjects\, including introductory background information\, the benefits of worm composting over traditional composting\, practical techniques and common problem troubleshooting. \nFollowing the workshop\, the instructor offers to remain in contact with the households that have created a worm bin until they reach a point of self-reliance. The instructor also returns to the library every 3-to-4 months to assist with the first harvest of each student’s worm bin (which is also taking place at the start of this workshop). \nWANT WORMS?? There will be 5 free starter kits available for attendees of the workshop! Each starter kit comes with everything you need to begin vermicomposting at home. If there are more than 5 attendees who would like a kit\, a random drawing will be used to determine the recipients. Attendees who simply wish to view the presentation are also welcome\, no commitment to vermicomposting is necessary! \nThis event is free and open to the public. For questions or directions to the library\, please visit freeportlibrary.com or call 207-865-3307. \nFreeport Community Library\n10 Library Dr.\nFreeport\, ME 04032\n207-865-3307\nfreeportlibrary.com
