Mexicali Blues is a Maine-based retail company that since 1988 has offered its shoppers one-of-a-kind jewelry, exotic home goods, handmade giftware from around the world, and groovy clothing from recycled silk wrap skirts to classic tie dyes. What started with a breezy road trip and one tiny storefront in Portland, Maine, has since grown into six shops (all in Maine), an online retail and social hub, and our very own brand of unique and adventurous clothing, jewelry, and gifts. Our Freeport location is truly a bohemian oasis in the midst of a bustling downtown shopping district.
As importers we strive to buy only the handmade, the high quality, the authentic, and the wholehearted. By doing so, we support and sustain timeless artisan techniques—like hand-stamped batiks, silk saris, hand-blocked textiles, hand-beaded jewelry and embroidery—and cultural traditions like world music, meditation, yoga, Ayurveda and more.
Pete and Kim Erskine founded Mexicali Blues because they wanted jobs that would enable them to travel often, share and sustain the diverse cultures they care about, contribute to their community in Maine, and to spend time with the people they love. You can feel it the moment you walk into any one of our stores—a kaleidoscope of colors, cultures and joy. People are happy here, and people are happy to BE here.
Mexicali Blues is your local Maine connection to the global marketplace, with an array of exotic items that have been responsibly imported and affordably priced. With funky bohemian goods from countries like India, Nepal, Thailand, Bali, and Guatemala you can shop around the world without the price of a plane ticket!
