Hello from the Brown Dog workshop in North Waterboro, Maine. I am TammyJo, owner, artist, and maker. Brown Dog Originals, named in memory of my faithful chocolate lab, was founded in 2016 as a creative outlet for my passion for making giftables – things that are gifted with the intent to bring happiness. I originally began by painting and etching decorative glassware and selling my pieces at local craft fairs. I started exploring different ways of creating more detailed pieces and then branched off into offering a greater variety of wares. Somewhere along the way, my little glass business became a multifaceted, full-time business. Along with offering full-service engraving and a line of giftables using original artwork, I also have a hearty wholesale component with my wares marketed to gift shops across the country.
I am a Maine girl through and through. I love spending time outdoors, enjoy listening to the loons on the lake and the lapping of the waves on the beach. My line of giftables predominately features original artwork that reflects my love for Maine and the iconic symbols of our state through my sketch and watercolor paintings. After painting, drawing or sketching on paper, I photograph or scan my work to create a digital copy for printing on mugs, towels, trivets, coasters, and more. Sketches and line art are used for engraving on wood boards, glassware, slate and insulated drinkware. I often like to use a piece of art in multiple ways to make matching sets. For example, a painting of a chickadee appears on mugs, coasters and trivets and then a sketch of that painting is used for wood boards and glassware making for a cohesive line of home décor items.
My workshop is set up for sublimation and laser engraving and I sublimate and engrave all of my own pieces. I source as many Made in the US products as I can for my base wares and always purchase them through US based companies. I strive to keep my pieces original and with my signature style of loose and classic Maine.
