Meetinghouse Arts – Watercolor Meets Wood: Painting on Birch Panels with Deena Ball

January 31 @ 10:00 am - 3:00 pm

In this innovative workshop, students will learn to combine traditional watercolor techniques with modern watercolor grounds on birchwood panels. Begin by applying watercolor grounds to create a richly textured underpainting that serves as the foundation for your piece. Once dry, paint over this prepared surface using your regular watercolor palette to achieve stunning visual effects.

The technique produces particularly striking results when working with granulating pigments, such as the Daniel Smith PrimaTek collection, which settle beautifully into the textured ground. The mineral-based pigments create captivating organic patterns that enhance the natural warmth of the birchwood support.

Students will also discover professional finishing techniques for sealing and protecting their watercolor-on-wood paintings without traditional glazing or matting, ensuring their artwork remains vibrant and protected for years to come.
