Primarily self-taught, I have learned through curiosity and experimentation as well as through a variety of workshops, including at Haystack and Penland School of Crafts; Zoom workshops in all aspects of creating jewelry with steel, including adding precious metals to steel. I create jewelry in several media: silver rings, bracelets, necklaces, and earrings with textures from leaves and other surfaces, 24k gold Keum Boo, precious gemstones and karat gold embellishments; necklaces, bracelets, and earrings in low carbon steel in sheet and wire form, also with textures, 24k gold Keum Boo, and karat gold embellishments. I particularly love creating unusual surface textures by etching and/or fusing other metals (gold, silver, bronze) to the steel. All of my steel pieces are patinated black, sealed with penetrating oil, and finished with metal wax buffed to a soft sheen. In addition, I make beaded necklaces and bracelets, using the Japanese 8-strand braiding technique called Kumihimo. My latest pieces have my own handmade sterling silver clasps. I love the Japanese concept of Wabi Sabi, and strive to bring it into all of the work I make, and most especially in the steel pieces.
