In 1950, a 14-year-old boy named Åke Nordin was preparing for a trek in the mountains of Northern Sweden, but he was feeling particularly uninspired by the backpacks available to him, which had a nasty tendency of bunching up and riding too low. His solution: A self-made wooden frame that improved the distribution of weight across his back and allowed him to carry more weight comfortably. Ten years later, the ingenuity that lead to that frame—a modified version of which is now standard throughout the industry—lead to the start of a now-global outdoor outfitter called Fjällräven. Named for the arctic fox, a small predator native to the Swedish mountains, the company has been devoted to innovative design, smart functionality, and durable gear for more than 50 years.
